Manitoba’s new accessibility legislation means better service for city residents and businesses, healthcare patients, students, customers and Manitoba citizens in general.

Under the Accessibility for Manitobans Act (AMA), cities, regional health authorities, school divisions and government agencies must develop a multi-year accessibility plan that will identify barriers in their policies, programs and services and propose ways to eliminate them. Barriers may be physical, attitudinal, technological or systemic due to policies and procedures and communications.

Reasonable Accommodation

Reasonable accommodation under the Human Rights Code means allowing for changes to the way things are usually done. An example would be a landlord installing automatic doors to ensure access for a person with a physical disability or installing a ramp or elevator. Service Animals

A service animal is any animal trained to assist a person with a disability. The disability may be visible, for example, blindness or it may be invisible, such as, post-traumatic stress disorder. We help you write your service animals policy such as what employees should ask if they are not sure if an animal is a service animal or not.

Support Persons

Some people with disabilities may be accompanied by a support person who assists with mobility, communication, personal care or medical needs. A Support Person can be a paid professional or a volunteer, family member or friend. We help you think through your policy on support persons in terms of access and fees.

Assistive Devices

A person who is disabled by a barrier may use assistive devices to remove or reduce the barrier. We help you identify a wide range of assistive devices currently being used such as, ergonomic keyboards, laptops with speech output, e-paging, large print watches hearing aids with built-in FM systems, talking calculators, voice activated recorders,specialized computer software programs.
